Warriors FC got their third round of the Singapore Premier League off to a good start, beating Geylang International 1-0 at the Bedok Stadium. The win was important as it ended a run of three straight defeats.
The home side should have taken the lead through Ryan Syaffiq after nine minutes. After being set up by Fairoz Hasan, Ryan could only manage send his shot wide.
A minute later, Warriors took the lead through French forward Jonathan Behe. Good movement saw Behe connecting with Shamil Sharif’s corner kick and sending the ball into the back of the net with a precise header.
Warriors should have added to their one goal tally but could not find the second goal. Geylang custodian Zainol Gulam once again played a part in denying his former team on numerous occasions. Shamil had two long range efforts pushed away by Zainol, while Fadhil Noh was denied by his outstretched foot. He then prevented Behe from scoring his second of the game by pushing away the Frenchman’s shot from outside the penalty box.
Two minutes into the second half, Zainol was once again called into action as he dived low to ensure that Sahil Suhaimi’s free-kick on goal was denied by his finger-tips.
The missed chances nearly came back to haunt the away side as Geylang began to threaten. Anders Aplin saw his left-foot goal bound shot headed away to safety by Kento Fukuda. Fumiya Kogure then saw his direct free-kick saved by Warriors keeper Mukundan Maran who dived at full-stretch and caught the ball cleanly.
Warriors eventually finished the match with ten men. Club debutant Khairul Nizam was given a direct red card by the referee for what was perceived to be a dangerous tackle on Ryson Yap barely ten minutes after coming on as a substitute.
